Chemo Safety

The hazards of cytotoxic solutions and powders have been well documented. Many associations both locally and internationally have set guidelines for the safe handling of cytotoxic drugs. The guidelines recommend specific procedures and equipment that will offer maximum protection for the operator.

Workcover guidelines for the Safe Handling of Cytotoxic Drugs and Related Waste in Healthcare Establishments (NSW 1995) recommend during administration the operator should wear:    

  • a particulate type respirator (not a surgical mask).
  • a long sleeved gown of impermeable material.
  • safety spectacles with side shields or goggles.
  • long PVC, surgical or purpose manufactured gloves. Operators not wearing special purpose gloves should be double gloving…

Also recommended is that:

  • Spill kits should be located so that they are readily available for immediate use at all sites where cytotoxic drugs and waste are handled, stored and transported.

0302: SPILL PREP MAT NON STERILE

Cytotoxic drugs should be prepared within a laminar flow cabinet.  The safety cabinet work surface should be covered with plastic-backed absorbent paper so that any spills are absorbed quickly.  The 0302 Chemo safety Spill Proof Preparation Mat is ideal as a work surface for chemo preparation and administration.

  • Unique 3 ply design is functional and effective – sandwiches highly absorbent gauze between top layer of penetrable mesh and bottom layer of non-penetrable plastic backing
  • Top Layer is a lint free penetrable mesh.  In the event of a spill, the spill will soak through to the 2nd layer and allows you to maintain a clean, dry work surface

ALG BAG: RED ALGINATE SOLUBLE BAGS

  • Alginate bags are high density translucent red polyethylene bags designed to prevent personnel from coming into contact with potentially contaminated garments - garments that have been worn during manufacture or administration of hazardous drugs, or have come into contact with bodily fluids
